Newcastle United have had some incredible signings over the years. Alan Shearer, Bruno Guimarães, Alexander Isak and David Ginola all left their mark on Tyneside.
But for every success story, there have been transfers that fans would rather forget.
Whether it was huge fees, massive wages, poor performances or simply failing to live up to expectations, these players went down as some of the biggest transfer disasters in Newcastle United history.
Here are Newcastle United’s 10 worst signings of all time.
10. Florian Thauvin 🇫🇷
When Newcastle signed Florian Thauvin from Marseille in 2015, supporters believed they were getting one of France’s brightest young talents.
Instead, they got a player who never looked comfortable in English football. Thauvin struggled with the physicality of the Premier League and failed to make any meaningful impact before returning to France after just one season.
Ironically, he went on to become a World Cup winner with France after leaving St James’ Park.
9. Henri Saivet 🇸🇳
Few Newcastle fans remember much about Henri Saivet’s spell on Tyneside.
Signed from Bordeaux in January 2016, the midfielder made very little impact and spent most of his contract out on loan. While the transfer fee wasn’t huge, it quickly became clear he wasn’t at the level Newcastle required.
8. Emmanuel Rivière 🇫🇷
Newcastle desperately needed goals when Emmanuel Rivière arrived from Monaco in 2014.
Unfortunately, goals were the one thing he couldn’t provide.
The French striker scored just once in the Premier League and quickly became a symbol of Newcastle’s recruitment struggles during the Mike Ashley era.
7. Jean-Alain Boumsong 🇨🇲
Boumsong arrived with a strong reputation after impressing at Rangers.
Newcastle paid around £8 million for the defender, but his performances rarely justified the fee. Mistakes became a regular occurrence and he never looked comfortable in the heart of the Magpies defence.
6. Marcelino 🇪🇸
One of the strangest transfers in Newcastle history.
Signed from Mallorca in 1999 for around £6 million, Marcelino never played a single competitive match for the club due to injuries and adaptation issues.
Paying millions for a player who never appeared remains one of the worst pieces of business Newcastle have ever conducted.
5. Anthony Elanga 🇸🇪
Expectations were huge when Newcastle spent big money to bring Anthony Elanga to St James’ Park.
However, his return never matched the investment. Despite flashes of pace and potential, the winger struggled to consistently deliver goals or assists and quickly became one of the most criticised signings of the modern era.
Given the transfer fee involved, many supporters already view the deal as one of the club’s biggest mistakes.
4. Xisco 🇪🇸
The poster boy for Newcastle’s chaotic transfer strategy under Mike Ashley.
Signed from Deportivo La Coruña in 2008, Xisco scored on his debut and many fans hoped it would be the start of something positive.
It wasn’t.
That goal proved to be one of the few highlights of a disastrous spell which saw him disappear from the first-team picture almost immediately.
3. Yoane Wissa 🇨🇩
A ranking that will divide opinion, but the scale of the disappointment cannot be ignored.
Newcastle paid a huge fee to sign Wissa, expecting an experienced Premier League forward capable of making an immediate impact.
Instead, his performances failed to justify the investment and questions quickly emerged over whether Newcastle had massively overpaid. Considering his age, transfer fee and lack of influence, many fans already place him among the club’s worst-ever signings.
2. Albert Luque 🇪🇸
When Newcastle signed Albert Luque from Deportivo La Coruña in 2005, supporters thought they were getting one of Spain’s best attacking players.
Instead, injuries, inconsistency and a lack of confidence turned the move into a disaster.
Luque arrived with enormous expectations but never came close to delivering on them, making him one of the biggest flops in club history.
1. Michael Owen 🏴
No signing divides Newcastle supporters quite like Michael Owen.
The former Ballon d’Or winner arrived from Real Madrid in a club-record deal and was expected to take Newcastle to another level.
While Owen scored goals when fit, injuries dominated his time on Tyneside. Newcastle paid enormous wages for a player who was unavailable far too often, and his relationship with supporters deteriorated further following the club’s relegation in 2009.
For many fans, no signing better represents wasted money, broken expectations and disappointment than Michael Owen.
